There is something very special about a love letter gift, because the great thing about writing down how you feel is that your significant other will be able to read that letter, note, or journal over and over again. As a writer, one of the best ways that I express myself is through the written word. So I love to be able to express my love for my husband in writing.
But you don’t have to be a writer to give a love letter gift. My husband, who has declared himself to not be creative at all on many occasions, has written me some of the most beautiful love letters. And that’s because he writes from his heart, not because he is trying to be the next Shakespeare.
Here’s some tips for how to write a love letter…
- Write in your own voice. Don’t try to copy love letter examples or squeeze your love into iambic pentameter. Your significant other doesn’t want a love letter from Byron or Joe from down the street, they want one from you! Embrace your quirky sense of humor or your reflective nature. Write as though you were speaking the words to your loved one.
- Spend some time alone reflecting on your relationship. What do you love about her (especially the little or the silly things)? What are your favorite memories together? Why do you want to spend the rest of your life with him?
- Take your time, but don’t over think it. Don’t agonize over exactly the right words, instead focus on communicating your thoughts. It may not ever be perfect in your eyes, but it will be perfect to them because you wrote it for them.
So remember, be genuine, share your heart, and don’t look for perfection.
Here are some cute and creative ways to show your love through notes and letters for an anniversary, wedding, or Christmas gift:
Love Letter Scavenger Hunt
The perfect surprise on your anniversary or Christmas morning would be a love letter scavenger hunt wound throughout your home. It can be a way to simply follow your significant other through their day with notes starting on the bathroom mirror and then on their lunch, laptop etc. Include sweet nothings or silly puns to make them smile and laugh throughout their day.
Another fun idea is sending your sweetheart on a scavenger hunt to find their gift. Present them with the first clue and then hide other clues either around your home, or if you are really adventurous, around your hometown. The hunt could include meaningful locations for your relationship, inside jokes, and things you love about him. Use heart shaped post-its to write your notes, or these fun DIY scratch-off cards to reveal secret messages.
Why I Love You Journal
For his first anniversary gift to me my husband gave me a journal that he had written a letter in with the promise to write more over our years together. It is a special way for him to record his feelings for me and memories from specific points in our marriage. You can execute this love letter gift by purchasing a beautiful leather journal and filling the first pages with a reflection on your last year together.
Are you looking to record your entire relationship together? The “Why I Love You” journal offers fill-in-the-blank and question style pages to record your relationship from your meeting to why you love him and your hopes for your future together. You can either fill it out completely before gifting or just start writing and explore the rest of the book together.
Open When Love Letter Gift
The perfect gift for couples that are in a long distance relationship, open when love letters give the reader the chance to open letters when they are experiencing certain events or emotions. When you can’t be with your significant other during special moments and tough times, this is a way that your comforting or celebratory words can be with them.
Always wanted to create a set of “Open when…” letters, even if you aren’t in a long distance relationship? This set of 12 beautiful envelopes with notepaper allow you the opportunity to do just that and store them inside a “paper time capsule” book. Mark them to be opened at special times, such as one for each month of the next year, on the anniversary of special moments in your relationship, or on the occasion of events such as a fight or the birth of your first child. There is an entire line of these books, including one perfect for long distance relationships, the “open when…” collection.
Love Letter Jar
Another creative love letter gift is a jar filled with little notes for your significant other. It could be filled with reasons you love him, inspirational quotes, memories you have together, jokes, or a combination of all of the above. Fill a decorated mason jar with little pieces of paper and your husband can pull out one when he is looking for encouragement. Many people choose to have 365, one for every day of the year, but if that feels overwhelming, simply put as many as you can manage or continue to slip new ones in throughout the year.
Alternately, the jar could be a joint project that allows you to collect your memories and reflect on them at the end of the year.
If you’d prefer to not go the DIY route, this jar kit includes a jar that has a double sided chalk tag and 180 blank tickets to fill out.
