As a child I spent many summers and falls fruit picking, which is why I wanted to share the experience with my husband when we started dating. One of our favorite locations is Linvilla Orchards and this is our third fall going there. Since there are so many other activities there, including a corn maze, this was our first year actually picking apples.

Our Fruit Picking Date Night
This year I picked up my husband from work early and surprised him by driving to Linvilla Orchards for the afternoon for a fruit picking date night. First we snacked on Apple Cider and Apple Cider Donuts. They are one of the highlights of every trip there. It had been a stressful week so we started our activities with the apple sling. A bucket of 20 apples to sling is $5.
There are various targets to aim for, including scarecrows, straw bales, and barrels. We went through two buckets of apples. Even if you don’t hit any targets, seeing the apples explode on the ground is pretty satisfying.
We then went through a wander through all the fall decorations and pumpkins in Linvilla’s Garden Center. Every year they also have this beautiful set up for their Pumpkinfest:
Then it was off to the orchard for apple picking. The apple trees are across the street from the main Linvilla Orchards area. We purchased a peck box, which holds approximately 10 pounds of apples. Wagons and fruit pickers for apples higher in the trees are provided free of charge. There are over 25 varieties of apples to pick at Linvilla Orchards and each row is marked with a label. Ripe rows are marked with flags.
One of our first stops was the row of Golden Delicious apples. They are perfect for baking, so lots of yummy treats are soon to be made in our house. Here’s the recipe for the apple cobbler I made.
Other varieties included Gala, Cortland, Red Delicious, McIntosh, and Jonagold. We picked apples for eating and for making desserts and apple sauce. That’s one of the great things about a fruit picking date night, the fun lasts past the actual date.
After lots of laughter among the apple trees, we took our apple stash back to the car. Then we dined on burgers, cheese fries, and apple cider slushies to conclude our fruit picking date night.
Linvilla Orchards also has a lot of fun seasonal activities, including a straw bale maze, corn maze, and day and night hayrides. If you are bringing the kiddos along, there is a beautiful wooden playground, barnyard animals, face painting, and a train ride.
